Symposium 1: The Preposition in Igbo

Date: 1st December, 2009

The traditional view that the Igbo language has only one preposition, , has been maintained up to the end of the last century. However, towards the end of the same period, and up to the present, dissenting voices could be heard. These reactions have led to the following three main approaches to the Igbo preposition: (1) the traditional view of only one preposition in the language; (2) the more recent view of more than one preposition; and (3) the view that the language has a multiplicity of bound and free structures for expressing prepositional meanings.

This symposium is an opportunity for an intense exchange of views between the representatives of the different approaches. Other issues addressed include the possible development of Igbo preposition(s) from other lexical items, as well as how the prepositions of other languages (like French, German and Spanish) are realized in Igbo.
